The Fundamentals of Hair Care

Establishing a healthy hair care routine may seem so basic. However, it’s not uncommon for so many of the fundamentals for basic hair care to be overlooked and/or practiced incorrectly. We’re here to help ensure that you know exactly what to do and how to do it in order to achieve the healthiest form of your hair.

Prior to establishing your hair care routine, it is best to take note of the current condition of your hair and identify concerns you might have. Some of these concerns may be:

  • Dryness and damage

  • Damage as a result of coloring or chemicals

  • Frizz and flyaways

  • Hair loss

  • Oiliness or greasiness

  • Lack of volume

  • Split ends

  • Scalp issues: itchy, oily, dry, flaky

Depending on the condition of your hair, you may want to consult with a Casa De CC Specialist to help you address your concerns and help you establish haircare goals. These goals might include:

  • Color longevity

  • Wave and curl definition

  • Smoothness and shine

  • Volume, texture and body

  • Strength, repair and hydration

Once you’ve identified your concerns and established your goals, you can begin establishing your unique haircare routine.

01 Cleanse

Cleansing is always the first step to a haircare routine. Depending on the condition of your scalp, the number of products used and the condition of your hair, it may not be best to wash your hair daily.  Washing your hair will remove products, dirt, dead skin cells and grease built up, leaving your scalp and hair feeling clean. You should wash and rinse with lukewarm or cold water, as hot water can damage your hair.

02 Condition

Conditioning is vitally important for maintaining healthy hair. This step helps to detangle, seal the cuticles and provide moisture back into your hair and scalp, removed from the shampoo. You should leave the conditioner in your hair for 1-2 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Pro Tip: Use a wide toothed comb to comb the conditioner through your hair more evenly.

03 Detangle

After you’ve cleansed and conditioned, the next step is to detangle your hair. This helps to eliminate knots and minimize breakage. You may want to use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help with this process depending on the texture and consistency of your hair. It’s also more efficient to perform this step in the shower. Begin by detangling the lower portion of your hair and gradually working toward the roots.

04 Protect, Prime & Style

Prior to using any form of heat on your hair (e.g., blow dryer, curling tools, straighteners, etc.) be sure to prep your hair appropriately using a lightweight styling primer and heat protectant spray. These types of products will not only prevent damage to your hair, but will also help you avoid frizz and achieve that polished, smooth and silky look.

05 Moisturize

Once your hair is styled, depending on your hair condition, texture and type, you may want to moisturize using hair oil. Remember, a little goes a long way with this step and you don’t want to appear greasy and grimy. Use 1-2 drops for fine hair, 2-3 drops for medium hair and 3-4 drops for thicker hair. Prior to placing the oil in your hair, be sure to warm up the product between your palms and fingers and then apply using your fingers in a combing pattern in order to distribute the product evenly. Leave-in conditioners are also an option for this step.

06 Scalp Treatment

Do not ignore the importance of a quality scalp treatment. Scalp treatments can help you address some of the concerns you identified prior to building your haircare routine. This step will help remove dead skin, heal breakouts, restore moisture and overall health  to your scalp, taking your hair game to the next level. Consult with our team at Casa De CC about your next scalp treatment.
