Color Treated Hair: The Do’s & Don’ts
There’s nothing wrong with trying out new looks and coloring your hair to achieve it. However, if you’re going to color your hair, you should probably be aware of the do’s and don’ts of color treated hair care. Engaging the right processes and avoiding bad practices when it comes to color treated hair, can improve the longevity of your color, protect your hair from unnecessary damage, prevent dryness and help you avoid color loss. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to help you keep rocking those spicy shades:
Do
Invest in color-enhancing hair care products. Achieve a brighter and shinier look by using Ammonia-free products specifically designed for color-treated hair. Products like these are designed to effectively protect and treat hair that is left weak from the chemicals used in the hair coloring process.
Condition your colored hair. Make sure that each time you shampoo, you’re using a conditioner, leaving the product in for 1-2 minutes before rinsing with cold or luke-warm water. You may also want to try sealing your new color by applying leave-in conditioner, and sleeping with your hair wrapped.
Believe it or not, using the correct hair brush makes a world of a difference on color treated hair. A quality brush prevents fading and helps your hair to shine. You can achieve a variety of styles depending on the brush you use. If you’re going for that sleek, sexy look, try using a paddle brush. If your hair has layers and you’re wanting a more voluminous look, try a round natural bristle brush.
Introduce vitamins A, C and E to your hair. You can do this through certain shampoos, glazes and conditioners. This will help to restore your hair’s condition and prevent additional damage.
Don’t
Shampoo all the time. Shampoo no more than twice per week, unless you have oily or fine hair, in which case you can shampoo every other day if need be. Also be sure to avoid clarifying shampoos altogether. The cleansing agents in these shampoos can strip your hair of pigmentation provided in the coloring process.
Overuse hairspray. Did you know that 80% of color fade is caused by water alone? It is good to be mindful of the amount of water running over your hair while in the shower. Be sure not to overdo it. When rinsing your hair always use lukewarm or cold water–never hot–otherwise you run the risk of color loss.
Overheat your hair. Whenever high heat is applied to color treated hair, you run the risk of making the hair cuticles rough which causes dull color. If air drying is not an option, be sure to apply heat protectant products to your hair prior to using a blow dryer or flat iron on a low heat setting.
While these steps might seem simple, if not followed, you run the risk of traumatic experiences to your hair in worst case scenarios.
